Regarding the ac line in a new ceiling lamp... The lamp came with a clear ac line. One side of the line is completely clear, the other side has numbers printed on it for the entire length. Is there a traditional way of connecting the line to the wires coming from the lamp sockets. What I mean is, should the side with the numbers printed on it, be connected to the white or black wires from the sockets, or should I just note which way I connect them. Of course the lamp would work either way, but for maximum safety, I would think that it would be best to have the hot wire switched, and go to the center of the socket. That would prevent an unpleasant surprise in the event of one hand being on the grounded lamp frame, and the fingers of the other hand slipping on to the metal part of dead light bulb being removed while the power is on

The side identified with a raised ridge or printing is the neutral. It connects to the socket shell of the fixture and the white neutral from the ceiling.
