I have a HEIL super high efficiency Furnace 7000 it heats with gas in the winter & cools using electricity in the summer (as the air conditioner). A week ago the ac quit cooling - the unit comes on but it doesn't cool the area. Could it need freon & if so where to you put it in?

If the outside condensing unit is not coming on while the inside is blowing while the stat is calling for cool and your system is equipped with pressure switches then certainly it could be low on freon.

Refrigerant is added outside at the condenser but you need to be EPA certified to purchase and handle refrigerant and own a set of refrigerant gauges.

And while it could be a refrigerant problem it very well could also be a capacitor problem instead. These new systems have been known to use cheap, made in Mexico or China run caps and brand new they go out. What's your system doing exactly? Is the outside unit not coming on at all while in cooling mode?
