Looking to redo our fireplace. Thinking about using stacked stone and then a floating mantel.

In the pictures you can see the upper half where the tv is set in the depth of 1 brick. Do you think it's ok to knock the lower half part that's sticks out further to make everything flush? The fireplace can function but we dont plan on using it and hasnt been used in years.

Thinking about just using furring strips from top to bottom then cement board. The last picture is an idea of what were looking to do

Any feedback or tips would be appreciated

No, do not demo the lower half sticking out, unless you are really good at masonry. You will probably cause damage to the firebrick/CMU behind the face brick, and that all is load bearing.

Feel free to tear off the face brick mantel support and those "corbel" looking bricks (which looks to have supported some sort of mantel originally before the current wood was added). Then build out the upper portion to be flush with the bottom. Then face all of it with veneer stone.

Note when you do the hearth, code requires it extend 16" out, yours doesn't look to do that if I'm judging the pic correct.

So I think we decided to just ditch the whole wood burning fireplace all together. Think it's possible to put one of the longer recessed electric fireplaces in its place without having to frame out more? I like the idea of it being safer, less maintenance, and the look it better.

Is the chimney used for any other appliance, furnace or water heater? If not I agree, they are a poor source of back up heat (I know you said it would not be used) and as decoration what you were considering was a pain.

Are you eliminating the chimney entirely?
