Ok my living room lights switches. One switch provides a black hot wire to the second switch. the original switches are very old design. One switch used 3 out of 4 poles the second switch was a newer switch using only 2 poles.

The first switch looks like an old toggle switch when the switch is off one side makes contact at the top and the other side makes contact at the bottom.

I tried replacing this switch with a 3 way switch but to no avail.Hot black from 2nd switch to top of this switch with black return from bottom of this switch out.

this is how the original switch was hooked up.The 2 pole switch works fine, but I can not decipher why the second 3 way switch will not send power to the ceiling lights. I have asked electricians and no one seems to have any answers as to how to correct this situation.
