When was the last time the carberator was rebuilt?

Bad gas

I found an easy way to check for bad gas: smell it. Smell good gas first and then smell the gas in your tank. You will notice the difference. I would recommend cleaning the carb, checking the air filter, draining the gas tank if it hasn't been used in a long time and replacing it with new gas as suggested.
