Okay guys, sorry for the bold topic, but I'm in the middle of finals, I have a 3D project due at the end of next week, and I need some serious help. For my project I need to cut some small detailed foam buildings. I tried a lot of methods and finally have come down to building a foam cutter. There are plenty of tutorials online, but I'm stuck.

The design is super simple, I have a metal ring with wire attached. The wire runs through a wood board, then wraps around a nail underneath.

I bought a 18/24 volt power adapter, stripped the end and took the positive and negative ends, put alligator clips on, and attached them to the ring, and the nail.

It heats the wire. Problem is, it heats it way too much. The wire was getting red hot in a few seconds.

So I bought a 12/9/7.5/6/5/3/1.5 volt adapter. Stripped the ends. Did the same thing, however, when I tried connecting the adapter to my rig, It was starting to work, but the adapter would shut off after going over 6 volts. I need more power to cut the foam.

Anyone have any ideas?

I tried taking apart some of the adapter maybe I take out some device inside the circuit board of the adapter? No idea what that would be.

You can not hook a wire directly to the output of a transformer, it creates a short circuit and over heats. You need a rheostat in the circuit. The easiest way is to get a model train transformer with a built in rheostat and dial.
