Installed a new 3 way switch with a dimmer last night. So now, the ceiling light has 2 different 3 way switches on opposite ends of the house. After installation, I turned the power back on to test and both switches, along with dimmer function on the new switch, worked fine. Moving the switch around slightly, I may have shorted the switch when it touched part of the metal electrical box. Loud pop and the lights went out. After switching the fuse box over after the short, the lights came back on. Now, the new switch will only turn the lights on when the other switch is in a particular position. Also, the dimmer function no longer works. Any ideas on what the problem is?

Sure, you burnt up the switch. Replace it.

Makes sense and lesson learned. If I hadn't fiddled with the damn thing, for no reason at all, before turning the power off to push the switches back into the plates, this wold have never happened. Besides buying a new one, any way to fix the burned out switch?
