I hope I'm posting this in the right area.I appreciate any input as I have no knowledge in electrical.I have a concrete floor grinder that requires 220v to run.My plan was to hook it up to my 5500 watt generator in the 120/240v outlet.My dilemma is that the plug on the machine is a 3 blade and the the generator takes a 4 blade connector.Can I swap the plugs out ? If so what wires go where? thanks for any help...

Simply omit the neutral conductor on a new NEMA L14-30P cord cap.

Thanks for the reply, so just to make sure I understand..Im going to use the 3 wires off the 3 blade connector and connect them to the L14-30P cap,so ill have a ground wire and the other 2 wires connected to the new cap but not using the neutral at all? Does that make sense..

Lastly what blades does the wires hook up to on the new cap, I know one blade has a L shape to it...

The L-shaped one is the ground connection, it should be a bare or green-colored wire.
The two prongs to the left and right of this are your two hot connections, the other two wires will connect to this. The prong across from the ground (L-shaped) prong would be the neutral, which you aren't using in this case. :thumbsup:

Can you please elaborate, just want to make sure I'm doing this correctly, I don't want to mess nothing up....

Are you sure?
We are talking a bout a L14-30P, correct?
And since it's 240 volts, 3-wire, there's no neutral, it would be omitted, correct?

With an L14-30 plug the two hots go on the brass screws and the ground goes to the green screw. Leave the silver neutral screw empty.

I bought a 4 blade plug and it has L14-30P on it, so I'm assuming that's what I need...

I'm sorry. The OP wasn't clear. Does the generator have a locking receptacle or not. My comment was directed at non-locking. I don't know that I would say the blade on a locking plug is exactly "L" shaped.

I missed the second OP post that specified locking.

You are showing a 4-wire outlet, but Cee1281 only has three wires to the machine....I'm confused , to say the least....Which wire from the outlet will not be used?

The neutral/white will not be used. Since it is a 240Volt appliance it will use the two hot lines and a ground.
