I"m running a 20 amp 220 line to a plug in outlet for my lathe. The lathe (new) has a two ( horizontal), plus ground plug.When I run my 2 wire & grnd line from my 2 pole breaker (no neutral) to my plug in receptical, do both wires go to the hot side (brass colored) or does one go to the hot side & the other to the neutral (silver) side of the receptical??? The grnd of course will be properly connected.

This what the 6-20R look like.,,

And with straght 240 volt recpectale it will have two brass screw colour that you can use and you can use the 12-2 NM ( 4.0mm²X2) and you will have to remark the white conductor with electrical tape or marker to give you a head up it is a hot conductor not the netrual conductor at all.

That's not exactly what my receptical looks like. The left side is strictly horizontal---no L or T shape. It's a duplex with 2 brass screws & 2 silver
Same question---Both wires to brass or one to brass & one to silver

Are you talking about this one ?

( this photo is a 240 volt 15A verison )
If that the case the answer for straght 240 volt devices they never come with white screws at all only two brass colour screw { yes they do come in duplex verison as well}

Black conductors on one side and white { remarked } conductor on other side that for straight 240 volts.

The 15 amp 120 volt recpectales are complety diffrent and they will have both brass and silver colour screws.

If you have that receptale as I show you the photo if they did came with both silver and brass screw please do tell me the model number and I can able verify it.

Please note as my first photo above that will work for both 15 and 20 amp verison plugs to fit in 20 amp receptale. the second photo if you have singleplex receptale you only can use 15 amp breaker unless you have duplex verison then you can use 20 amp breaker

Yup thats the one I have. Not going back out there tonight-too much scotch-.Will check tomorrow. Will probably just go out & get the proper receptacle. Talk to you tomorrow
