What are the consequences of running an engine spec'd for 24:1 on a 50:1 mix? I'm sure it has been done plenty of times, but I've generally tried to follow the manufacturer's recommendations, so don't recall knowingly using a different mix in anything. I have an old Troybilt mini tiller that I won in a raffle or something back in 1995, only used it a few times, and it has sat for years, but still looks new, so I figured I would fix it up and sell it or give it to someone if I can get it running again. So I have disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled the carburetor, cleaned the tank, etc., but it's intended for 24:1 mix and all of my blowers, trimmers, etc. are 50:1, so I'm not crazy about having to mix a gallons of fuel just to check this out and show it to someone when I have two cycle fuel ready to go.

No citation, but modern oil is probably better than 30 years ago. I suspect a tank of 50:1 would not hurt that engine but that is just my opinion. Check the mfg web site for forum discussion to see what is being used.

Ummmm, you wouldn't want to add raw gas, that would thin it out even more.

You would want to add a splash of the 50:1 oil to the tank in your tiller. It won't take much. To make a 25:1 mix, you would add 2 containers of the oil to the same of gas you would use for one container of oil.

Just a teaspoon or even a few drops of oil depending on the size of the tank.

I only follow engine manufacturers mix recommendations if I'm using the
oil they recommend. Otherwise I follow the oil man'rs recommendations.

For years I ran Optimal at 100:1 in my KX and CR dirt bikes.

Now...few things spark intense arguments like lubricants...so don't count on
agreement w/o dissension..... :)

Oh no, I ain't going there!! That is too tough a subject even for my thick skin.

I was just trying to give the OP a solution to his thought about wanting to run a closer mix than 50:1.

If it were me, I would just run it at 50:1 and hope for the best. Like Bud mentioned, 30 years makes a big difference in technology of ALL kinds.

Although I might pull the plug and put a bit of oil in the cylinder and with the plug out, pull the cord a few times to lube it all up. And then use Starter Fluid to lean it out even more!!

Thank you all for your thoughts. But it worked out well. I was putting the tank back on, still wondering but leaning toward using the 50:1 mix I have when one of the neighbor couples down the road stopped in. Not sure why I didn't think to call him in the first place because he worked for one of my preferred lawn equipment dealers until they closed a couple of years ago, and is a pretty good small engine guy. So after I helped him sort out an electrical situation he was working on I asked him about it, and he said he would have no reservation running the 50:1 in it, at least enough to try starting it and see if or how it ran. He said that he would probably just keep running that in it, and doubted it would hurt it, but definitely no problem checking it out with that. After they left I went back to buttoning it up, filled it with the fuel I had, 50:1, primed it, and it took right off. So I'll probably leave that in it for now, and, as I said, sell it or give it to someone, give them the manual, point out that it says to run 24:1, and they can do as they wish. Just glad to have it going again because it is a nice little tiller, just not anything I have need for.
