I am northern California, doing a project to replace some wood siding with stucco and to break away existing stucco to install a foundation drip screed. The building is from the 1960s. I'm confused between two opinions.

Stucco contractor: "what you have on your building now is two coats. before the three coat system came out in the 1980s, they used to do two coats. the third coat is just thin finish coat. if you want it to match what you already have, do two coats".

General contractor: "you absolutely want three coats, otherwise it will crack and you'll be sorry".

The stucco contractor's quote is lower, because it's only for two quotes. Of course I like the idea of saving money, but I want it done properly. Who is right?

Thanks.
