One thing to think about as a first time home owner. If you hire someone to do repairs or renovations, suggest only hiring a licensed contractor and get everything in writing. If you hire someone who is not licensed to save money, you could end up losing your home.
A case in our city is a home owner who hired roofers to re-roof his home on a part-time basis to save money. One roofer fell off the roof and got seriously injured. He sued the home owner and won about $295,000. The judgment was that the homeowner was the employer so was liable.
So maybe think about "licensed contractor" costs when estimating the cost for redoing all of your plumbing.
