140x50 a good sized lot? I am thinking of buying this lot to build a house on over the next 3 years. All services are there on the lot already and it's flat land...

Depends where you live, but if you're in a decent sized city, that's a good lot size. Most new homes are built on lots 50x60, at least in my city, or if you have a town home 30x60.

50x100 was a common size lot when I lived in suburbs of New Orleans a few years ago. I had a 50x135 lot with a 1850 sq ft house on it. It was well set back from the street and had a decent back yard.

The narrowness will limit your choices in design - the house will be narrow and deep. This results in having a front perspective with a large percentage visially occupied by the garage door(s).

Some codes require 10ft. from the lot lines to build, so that effectively reduces your lot to 120x30. Depending on how the lot lays it may put you within 20ft of a neighbors house! That's not for me!

I thought it was 10 ft easement, but 5 on each persons lot. So you're Ten feet apart total.

Many new spec homes in Seattle are being built on lots that are 30' wide. This is not a typo.
30 feet wide - that barely leaves enough room for a hallway! :eek:

To the OP - as you can see from the replies, your prospective lot size is not uncommon for a city or surburban lot and building a house on it should be very doable.

I have lived in a dormatory room, military barracks, condo, small lot with close neighbores, large 1/2 acre lot, etc. Each has it's pros and cons when it comes to livability, upkeep, etc.

It depends on what you want.
