Ok, so I just bought my 02 Ford Focus zx5. It has a 2.0 4 cylinder, manual transmission, and seemed to be well taken care of. Only real issue that I have with it is that when I get into the gas pedal to accelerate it sputters a little. Like it's being choked out by the exhaust or the intake system or even the fuel. I plan to fix it myself, but I just don't know what part to start with and I'm not looking to dump money into things that don't need changed. Any tips or tricks to help me figure out where to start would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

It could be in need of a tune up. Pull the spark plugs and have a look at them. How do the plug wires look? Is the air filter clean? How about the fuel filter (might be located in the fuel tank, I'm not sure)? Getting the compression checked might give clues on of it's worth repairing.
