1920s wood floor has a very soft spot roughly six inches square. Boards feel as though they're about to crack, very spongy. Don't see signs of darkening from water.
Any recommendations about what the problem might be or the type of tradesperson to call very much appreciated.

How do I repair extremely dry hardwood floors that also have paint on them? It is a rental house and I don't want to make it worse. Should I just put some cooking oil on them? I have been using Murphy's oil soap and it's not helping.
