I have a Robin Subaru 7500 portable generator that I use as an emergency backup. I use it to run two furnaces,, a fridge, a freezer and a well pump. It can handle them all, as well as the other miscellaneous electrical stuff in the house. The surge power is 7300 and the full load is 6700...

Hi, I am replacing my old thermostat with a Nest smart thermostat. The Nest requires a 24V input. I removed the old thermostat and luckily there are two unused wires that are taped up in the junction box, which trace back to a 24VAC transformer in the attic. So it appears I have the wiring...

I lost power to half of my breaker box. When I check the voltage to each lug on the main breaker, I only see 120 on 1 side of the breaker. Is that normal? If I measure the voltage between the two lugs I get 120. Is my problem at the main breaker or maybe out at my power pole? Thanks.

Yes, another pulsing lights thread! I've read all of them and am still at a loss, months and months of troubleshooting and can't figure it out. Background: brand new house < 2 yrs old, 150A 240V service, any type of light will pulse, on/off a dimmer, LED or incandescent, and on any circuit. One...

Hello, I am looking to replace a wired door chime in my home. A majority of the wired door chimes I have found are 16V and use something like 6VA. I see that a lot of wired doorbell transformers are 16V 10VA. The wired doorbell transformer in my home is 16V 20VA. Does this mean it will burn...

When testing voltage at the receptacle with a load the neutral to ground is 0. Is this correct? Thanks!

So... I have 15-30 volts on ground on all outlets through the house and also on the dryer receptacle. This is with me sticking one probe into ground and using me as the other "ground". 10-2 is run to the dryer receptacle and is obviously on it's own dual 30-amp breaker. There is something to...

Hey all, some backstory: I've been working on rewiring my new home and have successfully updated the wiring to have dedicated 20a circuits for most of the appliances. Now the hard part begins of actually replacing all the runs for receptacles and lights in all the rooms. Before you ask, I...

Hi all, I noticed when flipping off some 125V / 20A breakers in our warehouse that the AC voltage on my multimeter read 15V, with the breaker in the OFF position. I tried another breaker and it showed 1.8V, and another showed 0.7V when off. I would have expected <100 mV as a guess for what...

Our electric bill was over $500-$600 each winter month from December 2014-March 2015 and in February we looked into Solar to reduce our monthly electric bills. Yes EVERYTHING in the house is electric from baseboard heat in each room, stove, oven, hot water, AC. In January we had to replace our...

Hi Ya'll I've got a stand of only 10 bulbs on this Christmas-style light string (but Halloween ghosts instead) and when I plug it in, it blows all 10 bulbs instantly. I have tested the 2 fuses inside the plug, they are good and I've changed out all 10 bulbs so it's not one shunt killing the...

Hi everyone forgive me in advance for the super rookie DIYer question I'm sure. My range bulb burnt out and as I was replacing it a short (I guess) happened. I went and killed the power at the breaker which Im sure I should have done in the first place. I had to buy a new oven lamp holder bc the...

G'day from Down Under! I live in Australia and will travel to the U.S. with my family. We are too modern with five iPhones and iPads (in total). Charging the devices at airports will be a challenge because I doubt that we will be able to find enough outlets. I would like to take an...

I hope this is the right place to put this. I would like to put a washer and dryer in my apartment - the ones I am looking at will fit nicely... except one small problem. While the washer runs off of a regular three prong 110v plug, the dryer requires one of those 220v giant plugs with 4...

I removed a non-load-bearing wall and all went well. Next I needed to relocate the light switches. All 3 switches were on dimmers and operating correctly. I rewired everything, but now face the problem that only 1 of my 3 lights is working properly. Two of them appear like they are getting too...

I am trying to figure out the best way to charge 20 tablets daily. I use them for a class I teach and will need to charge them every night after class. A transit case will hold 20 tablets and I would like to develop a system so I can charge them while they are stored in the case. I am trying...

I recently bought a new tv and plugged it in to my cable box upstairs and then plugged the tv into the outlet. Then the tv downstairs went out and something in the main cable connecting equipment to the house (outside) blew up. The cable guy came out and said there was a short to ground in my...

I have a 120/208 V, 3 phase, 3Kw generator. I am desiring to up the voltage to 230 V so I ran a tool that is rated for 230 V 3phase. Im told I can use boost transformers to do this. Anybody have any advice on how to go about doing this, installation, etc? Do they go before or after the...

Hi All, I'm new here. First post to the site. I have search but can't find exact question I have in mind. I want to use those "rope LED light" - those sold as a pack of 5 meter(or 16 feet). The type of LED's are called 5050; supposed to run on 12V DC. It just happened that I have a few old...

I have a pretty long driveway.......and I have a lamp post near the house, but is useless for how far away it is, except for taking care of the sidewalk and porch. At night, the mid section and end of the driveway is pitch black, making it difficult to see pulling in/out, and less security...
