For extreme cold temperatures, has anyone tried to Plumb hot water through cold water lines to prevent freezing? (And a trickle of water flow of course) Other ideas to stop freezing without using heating tape? (I'm worried about fire)

Hi, we bought an old cabin in the woods this past spring. We gutted the place, but installed a new toilet bowl only - the tank and water line are not attached. The toilet bowl is connected to septic tank without water. We use buckets from the lake to flush it. We have no other plumbing installed...

Is it because 1) Water expands when it turns to ice. When water in a pipe turns to ice it expands and burst the pipe. 2) when water turns to ice it compresses water downstream. This pressure in the compressed water eventually bursts the pipe, not the expanding ice. Thanks for any help.

We have no water coming in from the well and suspect it is a frozen line. The line is actually something more like plastic (not sure of correct name). So we are not sure how to unfreeze it. there is one area in our back yard where the line goes along the house and under the back door, and...

Pardon my ignorance in this post, I'm not very familiar with HVAC and the correct terminology so I've tried to circle some things for clarity in the photos attached. Two nights ago I noticed that our house had gotten noticeably warmer (we usually keep the thermostat somewhere around 69-70...

Hi, I had this problem all the last 4 years, and last night was the first cold night here and it didn't even get quite to the freeze point. I live in Coastal South Carolina. For the most part ever one has just said heat pumps are no good and can't handle the cold at all, which just doesn't seem...

So we had a big freeze here in Denver where it went from about 60 degrees to -15 degrees in about 12 hours. All of our pipes seemed to have done fine except for the cold water in one of our bathrooms. These pipes happen to be on an external wall, so my assumption is that the cold water pipe to...

This is an odd one for me - I have had issues with this set of pipes freezing in my house before - or at least I thought they were freezing. This year its different. This morning I went into my washroom and just about burnt my :censored: on my toilet. Hot water in the toilet? That's a new...
