  1. Concrete, Stone & Masonry
Hello, I recently poured pavers and the sides really showed a lot of exposed aggregate as well as on the edges when I tried to use an edge tool. What can I be doing wrong? Also, I heard adding Portland cement would increase the the smooth stuff on top. Any truth to this? Thanks for all the help.

I found some great looking poplar boards at HD yesterday, actually love the distressed looking green streaks and intend to use it for door trim. A friend told me the green will go away once it is poly'd so how can I protect it but not lose the color. I have finishing wax so maybe that's an option.

We recently took out the wall between our living room and kitchen/dining room and replaced it with a 30' long W12x26. We're going to leave the beam itself exposed and paint it, but I'm wondering how to finish the beam ends. If we want the beam to 'dive' into the wall, we'll have to meticulously...

Planning to begin the process of finishing my basement, and I am unsure what I need to do with conditioned crawl spaces. Home was built in 2015 and the basement has 2 crawl spaces that are fully encapsulated and insulated (ceilings not insulated). I would like to put walls over these areas with...

Hi, I recently removed some wood paneling, framing and fiberglass insulation from a room in my basement that a previous owner finished many many years ago. One small piece of the paneling was wrinkled, I believe due to a condensation/moisture issue, as my house was under renovation for the...

I have unfinished red oak cabinets that a friend built for my new home. The doors are red oak and the interior is real plywood, no pressed crap! I do not want to add stain at all, I want to keep the oak in it's natural state! Everything I am finding on "how to" involves staining. And all the...

Hello. I am working on my first real DIY project, making a simple bedframe. I have sanded my pine boards, but notice that there are some holes from the knots in the wood. Can I fill this with spackle or do I have to use something special? I am NOT staining the wood. Only painting. Thanks for...

I have an older house (1945) and all of our trim is stained wood (dark; most of it is oak, some is pine). I've gone through and repaired and repainted all of the rooms in our house (just finished the last one!). Now I'm working on the trim and I have two questions: (1) I cannot figure out how...
  9. Building & Construction
Hi All, I live in an A frame, on a slab. I have a very large attic, and I want to finish it, add a staircase from the main level up and use it to expand my store. My question is has anyone ever moved the beams around that hold the roof up(im assuming thats what they do)? they are zig zagged...

I have a Sun room that attaches to the back of my Brick house. The issue i'm having is: where the two rooms meet there is a pretty big gap and weeds, bugs and air get into the back room. I put some spray foam in the gap to close it up, cut the foam but now i'm left with just ugly looking corners...

Glad I came across this site. As I type I have Zisnner's Shellac Primer on my knuckles and fingernails, but the cabinets took the majority of the hit… Prime splotches aside, I am a young woman who had to learn commercial construction real fast (for almost 5 years) and loved to play with Legos...

I am remodeling my basement and plan on Drywalling the ceiling. 80% of the floor joists are clean for a nice drywall install. I have two main HVAC trunks that run the length of the basement down the middle that I will be framing in by building a soffit. About two feet parallel to the HVAC...
  13. Insulation
I'm not sure if this question belongs in this forum or the HVAC forum, but here goes. I'm insulating my unfinished, unconditioned basement hot water (not steam) heating pipes. I'm using 1"-thick-wall jacketed fiberglass tubes. At one point, the 2" IPS black pipe reduces to 1-1/2" IPS pipe...

I refinished a set of hardwood floors before and I used a clear sealer and water based poly. It turned out pretty good. Now I'm taking up a notch. I'm doing another set of hardwood floors. I want to stain and use oil based poly. I read the directions on the minwax stain (red mahogany) and it...

Hey folks. First project post so bear with me if I omit any necessary details. I'm trying to finish a room in the house. First on the docket sit the two windows. We hired in a handyman to replace the existing OEM trailer windows with some good ones. He did quite a hack job on the drywall and...

I need advice. I have finished a 30x17 room in my basement with cedar car siding out of an old barn (75 years plus). I'm using the back side of the wood. I want something to bring out the grain without much darkening of the wood. Using scraps I've tried Minwax Wipe On Poly, Lacquer, Fast-Drying...

The finish on my wood floors has popped up from my high heels, and I need to fix it! I'm guessing that if I apply heat somehow to melt the finish bubbles, that could work but I don't want to make the issue worse. Image attached of one of the many holes. Thanks for your help!

I know this sounds a bit crazy, but I have something I'd like to refinish in a satin. It is currently a high gloss and I love the color, but it would match some other things I have in the room much better if it was a satin finish. It is solid wood and made of maple I believe, if that makes a...

I have been asked to do a texture I have not done before, it looks like it was created with a jagged trowel and the pattern overlaps. I have heard it referred to as Sea Shell. If anyone could explain how to recreate this texture I would be very thankful.

Hi guys, I have a project coming up, and wanted to get some research in before I try to price it. A customer has had a built-in entertainment unit built (I will see it tomorrow), plywood carcase with wood facing. Let's say the trim is pine for now. I'm a residential painter (all things latex...
