Just had a new composite deck installed this week. Come home on the final day and immediately notice it is not fully square. Granted, no one else will notice and my wife still hasn't noticed. I just got off phone with contractor and he's willing to slash $500 and try to fix it on Monday. He...

Greetings. I'm in my 20s, not a contractor, and seeking to build a home that will outlast me. My research tells me that concrete is (somehow) still the best option for a foundation, period. It also tells me that pier & beam style foundations are the longest lasting, out of any concrete...

Hello Everyone, Question - Is it ok to use composite deck screws for holding T1-11 siding and/or 3/4 plywood for roofing ? I've used them and they seem to hold great, but I'm curious if there are any long term problems with these kinds of fasteners in regular wood. Thank you !

Hello, I am looking to redo my deck and would like to use composite deck boards. Over the weekend I went into a few home home improvement stores to see what is available and get prices. I noticed there seems to be two different styles amoungst many bands. I was hoping someone could provide...

Building a new deck and had planned to wrap all the exposed PT with composite fascia. Most of the pictures I see online of decks with guard posts mounted inside the rim joists show a nice smooth wrap job. Where I am code requires bolts and washers (and tension ties) on the guard posts. I...

I'm finishing up plans for a two level deck - the upper a 16'x20' two-beam ledgered to the house, and the lower a 16'x16' low elevation freestanding deck with a set of stairs joining the two. I'm only planning on building the lower deck this year and the upper deck next year but I want to...

I work at a marina and we recently bought Evergrain composite decking for our docks. I had heard only good things from the people that run the lumber yard that we use. However, I have been searching the internet and have seen a lot of complaints about the material disintegrating and about their...

We are building a deck (approx. 28x12) and I found a local guy getting rid of some brand new Veranda brand Composite railing in the boxes. For each 6ft section, it would cost us $24 which is an amazingly low cost but we can't afford all composite. I was thinking we could do PT or cedar decking...

I just did a new deck and--for God knows what reason--I used just one screw at a time to fasten the boards to the joists. I know it's typical to do two screws on each joist, but am I screwed (pun intended) by using just one. FYI: I have 12" joists, 1" composite boards, and 2" exterior screws.
