I used some acrylic paint on the bottom of the shelf to transfer the hole for the brass rod to the ply half circle

You're good at that subject of work but i'm ashamed to even attempt things like that .

Naw, get in there and try it, the worst that happens is it doesn't work out, then you've got some scrap stuff to use in a later project! I love having random stuff on hand for later projects and I find uses for all kinds of my "mistakes" - I'm a Bob Ross fan, "There are no mistakes, just happy accidents." :)
