Siding Choices

We are looking to replace our 45 year old aluminum siding and we are trying to decide on which product to use. There is vinyl ($4-5 sq/ft), engineered ($7 sq/st) and Hardi ($10+ sq/ft). We were at a local home remodeling show and saw some of the engineered siding (Eco Siding I believe the name was) that looked nice and we like the middle of the road price. Can't find much about that particular brand, but did read a lot of past stories of issues with the engineered materials (LP). Although those have supposedly been resolved and the new products are much better.

Hardi is probably out of the running due to price, but the engineered/Eco seems like a good middle of the road choice if it is improved.

How about vinyl? Always seemed cheap to me, and wouldn't be bad for small areas, but our house is 100% siding.

The one watchout we have is the front of the house takes a beating from the sun.

Re: Siding Choices

Nobody will agree with me but I'll post my wrong opinion anyway. Vinyl siding is to flammable for my liking. Also, if any neighbors have or install Low E windows at a later date, the vinyl will ripple/wrinkle like a piece of aluminum foil. There are 1 or 2 threads about Low E windows. Don't install vinyl.

Re: Siding Choices

You should also weigh future maintenance (yes all 3 will have some) like scrubbing, painting, caulking.
The biggest factor IMO, which initial cost is part of, is the value of your house.

Re: Siding Choices

Almost ever house around here has vinyl, haven't seen that problem with windows locally. Some houses are hardy and some just have hardy in the front for looks.
But doing way more the neighbourhood usually doesn't add that much more value to the house.

Re: Siding Choices

Our neighborhood varies from all brick, brick/siding and all siding. The house was purchased in the mid 2000's at near height of market and it would probably sell somewhat higher now. That's part of the reason we are shying away from Hardiboard, as we wouldn't see that money back.

I have no experience with the engineered products.
