Rake board repair

Hi Friends,

I live in a town home (3-story). I need to repair/paint rake board shown in the picture.

I am uncertain if this needs replacement or repair. Also, as shown in the picture, room trim needs fix. So, I am trying to be as informed as possible before making final decision and hiring contractor.

One of the contractors recommended PVC replacement, costing $650 )(labor+material+paint)!

I would like your expert opinion on following:
  1. What is a typical cost for replacement and/or repair for such task? I live in northern Virginia.$650 sound very high.
  2. Is PVC rake board better than wood?
  3. Is there anything else I should be aware of?
  4. Thanks for reading!
RJ

Re: Rake board repair

That looks like a sad repair already, It looks like metal without enough support for the shingles.

In your opinion what sort of repair is needed? I am very inexperienced in this area.

I think we need a picture closer up and identify what is there and what is the material that looks to be falling out.

Re: Rake board repair

Yes, need a better picture. But, PVC would be better than wood. PVC doesn't really need to be painted if you're ok with the color of the PVC. It is very easy to paint with latex. Initially the price jumped out at me but then I went back and saw it was 3 stories up.....that in itself would increase the cost. How about getting a couple of more estimates?

You better take him up on that $650 repair. I wouldn't touch it without a full roof replacement contract attached to it.

Re: Rake board repair

Thanks everyone. As it turns out only trim needed replacement , rake board is fine. Rake board replacement is around 1500-2500 (if shingle needs replacement too). This ha been valuable experience as I finally learned something
