Looking for exterior cladding ideas for a garage

I'm looking for some ideas for to cover the block on this garage in a way to compliments the house to which it is attached.

Note that I am removing the eaves and crappy half done siding of the garage. A roof top deck will be be built on top of the garage, so one can step out of the kitchen door (pictured) and walk out on to the deck at some point in the future.

Also pictured is what the place looks like from the front. The home's siding will be blue and corner posts white, as shown on the dormer in the 2nd photo.

Cement parging (think stucco) with a coordinating color.

In your opinion, is that something a DIYer can do?

I would build the deck first then see what would complement that.

The deck is probably going to be a few years off. It's a major undertaking. I have the replace the roof of the garage with engineered I joists (due to snow load and span), new decking, put down a rubber roof, and then build a floating deck on top.

We do a roof rated solid vinyl deck that lasts 25 - 30 years.

I think you could strap the building and match the house with siding.
Fisher1871 and ktownskier like this.

A DIYer could do but I would not try as a first timer. Maybe try on a back wall and see if you like results. It will require 2 coats to cover the joints and give a smooth finish. The cement dye comes as powder, mix a small batch and let cure to see the final color.

Does one take the parging below ground level?

When you say "deck" do you mean something that will allow water to go down into the garage?

The Parging / Stucco should not be more than 6 inches below grade.
As for a DIY project your end results would look very bad. It would require at least two persons that know a little about applying a cement product to a CMU wall.

I agree with Neal, strap the building and put the same siding as the house and paint it the same color or complimentary color. Just make sure to keep it above grade.

You can put parge below that. Or put in brick or stone veneer.

Just anything but the gosh darn block.

It's going to end up being a rental. I'm somewhat considering just painting the block and moving on.

If I go to sell it, put something nicer on.

No.

Replace current roof framing and decking (city engineer requirement for the planned roof top deck), put down rubber roofing, then a roof top deck/railing on sleepers (running with the slope).
