Liquid nail residue on concrete.

I removed and old carpet from my basement floor, and found that the person who laid it used liquid nails. Can I use a metal brush to remove the loose bits and tile over the residue? I am concerned about using chemical removers because of the vapors in my home with small pets and kids (I do have windows open and fans blowing for ventilation).
