Kerdi shower question

The drain kit came with the mixing valve seal but the instructions are rather vague.

I assume that I can use the package as a template for the finalizing the cut out, I have a rough opening the mixing valve fits through but it looks as though I'm going to have to semi assemble the valve cover and escutcheon plate to be sure it all is centered properly.

There is no indication of which end of the gasket goes in and which end goes out, I assume that the deeper (bigger end) goes inward.

Any suggestions?
