Backsplash Tile Alignment & Edge Question

Hi everyone, adding glass backsplash tile to the laundry room and had a few questions. Our countertop sticks out 3/4 of an inch on the side. I am pretty sure end line for the subway tile should be aligned with the end of the cabinets and not the end of the counter, but wanted to confirm that is correct.

Also the spacing between the counter and top cabinets isn't exact fit, so I am assuming I start my tiling at the bottom and then when I hit the top cut (something like 1/2") off the top run of tiles.

Photo shows the two lines, one where the cabinets are aligned and the other end of counter.

Re: Backsplash Tile Alignment & Edge Question

There is not a standard rule in either regard.

Actually, I usually run my wall backsplash to the counter end....or just before any contour on the counter.

I usually hide any cut tiles at the top....unless they are too small...then I shave some off the starter course..

No right or wrong....

Re: Backsplash Tile Alignment & Edge Question

Thanks guys, guess that makes sense. I am going to me using one of those metal edges since I have no edge tiles. The only thing about aligning to the edge is that there would be a bit of tile sticking out at the top part below the cabinet. I looked online and haven't seen what that looks like.

Re: Backsplash Tile Alignment & Edge Question

I agree with both your answers. The only issue is how to terminate the tile on the left side. You want something like a Schluter trim profile such as Rondec, or you want a trim tile such as a pencil tile. I would line up the trim directly with the edge of the cabinet and come straight down. Not lining up with the edge of the countertop is not an issue. If you try to bring the tile edge out another 3/4", you'll have an ugly little detour with the trim.

Edit: just saw your last post. Correct
You want the one that lines up.
