Re: wiring a ceiling vent

USUALLY, the black goes to the fan, the red to the heater and the blue to the light. Do you know which cable controls which function? Does the 12-3 control the light and fan, or the fan and the heater? Did you mess with the switch wiring? Seeing a picture of the switch pulled from the box would help, also.

. forgot to attach this diagram. you are correct with which color goes with what function.
Sorry for my ignorance but is the 12-3 the one with 3 wires? if it is, that wire coming from box is only for the light. the 4 wire cable connects to the wires for heat and vent. I havenít messed with switch as it was working earlier. you can see from the diagram how itís wired. it was a pain in ars getting the switch back in , so iím reluctant to pull it out again. thanks

Re: wiring a ceiling vent

OK, the black from the 12-2 (two wires and a ground) will connect to the black of the unit. The black from the 12-3 will connect to the fan, and the red to the heater. Make sure your neutrals are connected to the correct white incoming cable. Light to light and fan/heat to the 12-3 neutral. Make sure none of your grounding wires are folded in a way to where they can contact any other wire and make sure your wire nuts cover all the exposed wires for hots and neutrals.

Re: wiring a ceiling vent

so in your first connection, black to black of unit. iím assuming you mean black of 12-2 to the blue wire from light . is your explanation any different than the diagram. Iím not seeing any difference? is my drawing correct . thank you

Yes, I may have mis stated it. Your drawing looks to be in order.

Re: wiring a ceiling vent

So I just received my insulated duct for the the 3 way ceiling unit and was told by the roofer who installed
my roof vent that i should have 18Ē of insulation in the attic or in
my case the dormer. I have nothing close to that. I basically had to cut an opening next to unit in order to get my body into space above bathroom since i have no attic access. So my question is two fold:
1. should i lay down more insulation? Will it make that much of a difference in room temp?
2. how much room around unit, which has a heater do i need for safety reasons?

thanks
owen
