What type of material for Shaker style cabinet doors only

Looking to construct new doors for my current cabinets, not sure what original material is, but looks like there is some type of veneer on top. Eventually everything will be painted espresso. So no need to worry about grain/etc.

Looking to do this on a budget so won't be able to afford really expensive wood, looking for a middle ground material that isn't too soft but won't break the budget. Would it be acceptable to use poplar for styles and rails and then pine for plywood panel? Or would MDF panel be fine in this case?

Thanks!

Do you intend to prime and paint the doors or just finish them with a dark stain and poly?

Poplar would be fine for the frame. A little soft, maple is what is typically used for painted cabinets, but poplar would be OK. I'd use mdf for the panel. I think pine plywood is hard to paint.

Building a good door can be tricky, but doable DIY with proper equipment, patience, and approach.

Poplar and maple are excellent choices for painted cabinets. Maple is stonger and a better material overall. For good reason, it is the most common species choice for painted cabinetry.

MDF is fine for the panels.

If you are doing recessed panels, I would suggest 1/2” MDF with a rabbet cut into the back side of the panel, rather than 1/4” material. It will yield a heavier, robust door with a solid feel. Use 3/4” MDF for raises panels with a chamfered edge.

A high quality 1/2” plywood, such as birch, could also be used for a recessed panel. Pine would be a sacrifice and unless it’s a cabinet grade A faced, it may need some grain filler to smooth the surface.
