Question

Stovetop Under Cabinet Too Small

Hi All,

I'm trying to replace my kitchen old down draft GE cooktop (JP389B0D1BB). It is mounted on an island cabinet with inside dimension of 22 7/16" x 28 9/16". There are 2 other cabinets to left and right of cooktop cabinet.

My cooktop choices are limited, KitchenAid (KCED600GBL) or GE (PP9830DJBB).

I would think that the GE cooktop (preferred cooktop) would fit, but it appears it requires bigger cutout dimension (20 1/2" x 28 3/4").

The KitchenAid would fit - (20 3/4" x 28 13/64").

Question:
Since I'm replacing the countertop with granite, do you think it is OK to cut the side walls of the cabinet so the cooktop could fit OR doing so would weaken the cabinet in supporting the countertop?

Thanks!!

Oh I don't think you're talking about enough to matter (cutting a bit out of the sides of the cabinets I mean) - you could always add a couple of kickers a bit off the cutouts (if possible) to re-shore that area then too.

It's done all the time. I'd get the stovetop on site or get the dimension sheet to see how deep to cut. Usually it's only about 4" or less. Don't forget to include the thickness of the granite. If you want, you could attach a wooden piece front to back to help support the cutout of the granite on each side. Doesn't hurt to do that. I usually took a piece of filler strip and attached with pocket screws.

Do you have a picture, link, or even a video on how it is usually done? Thanks again!

I don't have any pics or videos, but all you're doing is cutting out each side of the cabinet. I use either a handheld jigsaw or my Fein oscillating tool. You don't have to cut anything on the front face of the cabinet, or anything on the back of the cabinet. If you're cabinets are in place, it's probably going to be easier to use the oscillating tool. Just determine how far from the top edge of the cabinet you need to remove and draw a line and follow it. You should be able to stop your cut about an inch short of the front and back of the cabinet. As far as the additional support, just get a piece of 1" x 4", pine, poplar, etc., and cut it so it fits snug. It will actually be fastened in he next cabinet over from where your cooktop is going. One on each side, going from front to back. Fasten it so it is flush with the top edge of the cabinet.

Are we just talking about 3/16"?
Is the construction of the cupboard just boxes screwed together.
How wide is the box inside?
