Which size subway tile?

In my ongoing project replacing a whirlpool tub with a different whirlpool tub, I plan to tile the walls surrounding the new tub up about 18 inches in white subway tile. I'm trying to get in my minds eye what size would be best. The big box stores have it listed on their web sites in 3 X 6 inch. I'm concerned that for the small area I'm doing, that tile may look too big. I'm sure someone would have 2 X 4 or something like that. Which in your opinions would look more to scale given the area to be tiled? Thanks

Re: Which size subway tile?

I think both will look fine but
I would go with which tile has best layout options for
your perimeter between tub dam & corners at walls...

are you using a bull nose to frame perimeter or what?

Peace

Re: Which size subway tile?

I think with the short wall being in place, the 3" x 6" tiles will fit more pleasing to the eye "dimensionally" than any shorter in length tiles. BUT, the end wall will be an issue will the longer tiles to do. JMO though

Re: Which size subway tile?

Do I get to change my mind since my edit time ran out ? My goofy sketch shows the end wall facing tiles using 3" x 6" may look odd. So you may be spot on going with a more rectangular look for the tiles. JMO though...

P.S. I hope you can lay tiles better than I can draw them this early in the morning.

I was born a cheapskate if the look is similar I would go with the cheaper, they will all be out of style in a few years anyway.

Re: Which size subway tile?

While we're on the subject of tile, when you cut the glazed white ceramic tile on the wet saw, do you cut face up? or down? Also, when I did our backsplash in the kitchen, it seemed what ever I marked the tile with disappeared as soon as the saws water started running over it. What is best to mark the tile so the line doesn't go bye-bye? Thanks

You cut face up.... If I'm not jigged up and have to follow a line... I use blue painters tape on the tile and mark on that.

Get a China maker. Sold near tile supplies. It's like a wax pencil

Re: Which size subway tile?

Well, the tile is done and grouted. I'm going to seal the grout in the next day or two. Question: I figured on using a foam brush and hit just the grout lines. How critical is it to get the sealer off the glazed tile?
