Shower waterproof membrane

We are re tiling a shower. Am down to the bare studs and previous shower pan is place . At this point I am considering one of two options.,

1 add a moistsure barrier directly to the studs behind the backerboard? If so, at the bottom what is the best way to connect it over the lip of the existisng shower pan ? Silcione?

2 Use a product like Redguard, which would be applied after the backerboard is up. Same question with this option, how do I treat the small gap where the backerboard meets the shower pan with Rudguard?

How old is the shower pan. When redoing the shower, I'd advise replacing the pan as well.
