Roofing felt/Plastic with durock good enough?

I went to pick up 4 sheets of kerdi boards today, as I'm looking at this thing, I felt like I'm over doing (over spending) it for a shower tub surrounds. It was about $100 per board

The previous installation was with roofing felt stapled to studs then durock sheets. I inspected and everything is dry and have no signs of water damage from behind the roofing felts. So after 15 years of heavy use and it still hold up, why not do it again?

For under $100 I can put new felts in and durock. Saving the Kerdi boards to use in the master bath steam shower where it's mandatory.

If I have to spend an extra 2 hrs to put up durock vs Kerdi boards and save $300 and have no negative affect, IMO it's worth it.

Would anyone recommend against this thought process?

6 mil vapor barrier and Durock will work just fine. Be sure you use alkaline resistant mesh tape and thinset on the seams, corners and cubbies. I also like to use Redgard on the cubbies since it could hold water, as well as the seams (overkill)

Since I will be using kerdi here and will probably not want to use the $100 Kerdi niche, redgarding the niche sounds like a great idea.

Thanks for saving me money!

btw: would this work? and do I have to use any special staples or something like the one below works?

I picked up a roll of this, before I put it on, just wanted to confirm that this is OK to be used before putting the hardiebacker on
