Right tile to pick when outlets are of different heights.

We are remolding our Kitchen and the last thing to do is the backsplash. When the outlets were installed they were not installed all at the same height.
(All height measurements are from the top of the granite counter)

On the left side of the sink there are 2 outlets
1 at 6 5/8"
1 at 6 1/4"

On the right side of the sink there there is 1 outlet.
1 at 6 1/8 "

Our counter is 'L' shaped so the other part of the 'L' there are 2 outlets.

1 at 6 7/8"
1 at 7"

We where thinking of installing subway tile with an 1-2"accent border above the outlets.
But now we are thinking that it just may not look right because the outlets are of different heights.
Without having to redo all of the outlets, (raising or lowering) which would be a lot of work, are there some other suggestion as to what we can do to make it look nice.

Moving the boxes is best we know. A horizontal tile accent laid in a height of just an inch higher and inch lower than the electrical boxes, could be used to"lose" the visual effects of the up and down electrical boxes.

The eye focusing on the smaller 1/2 " height tiles will not see the difference in box heights as much, like they would if the boxes are sitting in rows of 3 " or 4" height tiles. JMO though.

Thanks Greg. If I do move the boxes, what should be the correct height from the counter-top to install them? I Appreciate You!

As Greg suggests moving them all even is recommended.

At the 7 inch line would be my way, but others might disagree.

Pick whatever pleases your SWMBO, and be happy.

Moving the outlets shouldn't be that difficult since the repairs can be done
in a hack manner as it'll be covered by the tile.
As for the new height, it doesn't really matter....but....maybe set it so the
outlet center is also a tile center. Just a thought.....doesn't really matter.

Re: Right tile to pick when outlets are of different heights.

Thanks .. Just to verify what I need to do... To move the outlets I will need to shut power off, un-wire the wires, then cut back some sheetrock enough to pry the old box and reinstall at height we pick.. My wife likes the height at about 7". Then rewire and we are done.. Is that basically what I need to do..

Re: Right tile to pick when outlets are of different heights.

Basically correct.

I would remove the sheetrock first, then power down, unwire the outlets, move boxes, rewire them, hopefully there is enough slack in the wires to do this, if not use pigtails and wire nuts to get enough slack.

Then scab a patch in the holes, and tile.

The patch is needed to have something to adhere the tiles to.

Really not a hard thing to do.
