You should check out the one-piece shower bases by KBRS at

They offer one in the style you are interested in, although you would have to compare their dimensions to see if it aligns well with your drain.
I recently installed their 34x60 unit, and have been very happy. Easy to install with a solid flat bottom which you simply set in a thinset bed, and you can use normal thinset to apply tile to it. For further info, check out my previous posts on the Tile Redi Shower Pan Question thread.

Great point. So I will need to find drywall that would be the same thickness. I will spend some time and look into this.

Let's assume for now I don't want to affect the ceiling. I may change my mind, but let's assume this for now. Based on this would I then do the following:

1) Cut the drywall one foot OR half foot below the ceiling and then remove it.
2) Replace the drywall with new drywall.
3) Tape the seems of the drywall.
4) Mudd it up.

Would this sort of be the approach? Any pro tips or suggestions?
