Properly patching soap and bath rag holder insert?

I recently replaced the valves in the faucet assemblies and noticed some tiles that need replacing. We've decided to re-grout in charcoal gray to update and extend the life of the original tile. What is the proper method to patch the hole where the old soap holder was?

My initial thoughts are to take out a few surrounding tiles, install backer board and then re-tile the area?
