Proper steps for durock/red guard install

Hey everyone! New here and really seeking guidance on a bathroom gut/remodel.
I got a hallway bathroom (no exterior walls, all interior) in miami florida (I think location, humidity and daily temps might influence) that I'm currently up to the durock install. So far I've changed out and replaced a couple of wall studs and added new PT pieces and had the plumber install the shower pan (vinyl) on the concrete foundation.
My first question is about the durock install, for the durock to durock seams, what mix should I use? I have been told that using joint compound (green-lid) is fine cause I'm going to water seal with redguard anyways. I was also told to never do that instead using thinset mixed with "star5000" and plaster the seams with durock cement board tape.
My tile guy did the joint compound and I'm not sure if it's overkill to have him sand it down removing it and re-plaster using the thinset mix.

Currently the vinyl shower pan is installed but not mortar-pitched yet... any thoughts/suggestions?
