Payment by trade

Does anybody know if the word " By Trade " written at the end of a contract between the contractor and his client, means that you have to pay everytime the contractor finish a part of his remodel work? For example: Plumbing, Drywall, demolition etc... Each step, once is done has to be paid. Is it true?
Thank you
