old cabinets...

Reusing old wall/base cabinets in garage or basement...??? Isn't that outdated?

Re: old cabinets...

Why does current style matter? If the cabinets will work for you, use them.

Re: old cabinets...

I have kitchen cabinets in my tool room - they came out of a house that was being torn down. I used heart pine [out of another old house] for the counter top. Works well except it's hard for me to keep the counter top uncluttered with stuff.

Don't toss anything. You'll need it in 2 weeks.

Re: old cabinets...

My parents' house was built in the late '60s. They had a kitchen fire about 15 years ago and got all new cabinets afterward. I have two of the originals in my garage now.

Re: old cabinets...

My old kitchen cabinets and countertop went into an unused back room as a temporary kitchen while I was gutting and rebuilding the real one.

Rather than tear them out, they've now got a 3rd life as a bar. I like it so much I might renovate the whole room into a proper man-cave type bar. I think they'll be ready for the dump at that point.

But I do still have a couple of old cabinets out in the barn, and one down in the basement. Those will stay.

Would this look better than kitchen cabinets?

Re: old cabinets...

And remember, those good old 50's 60' 70's cabinets did not know a thing about "pressed board" MDF, or laminate veneer skins.

Re: old cabinets...

Outdated?? Nope.

I don't have photos to post from this PC but, I went to the restore store and bought three matching kitchen 36" base cabinets and built my back bar with them. New paint (well, ya never know paint) job, ya never know hardware, reclaimed hickory flooring (that I reclaimed out of an old bldg) for the counter.

I spent a grand total of $55. The price of the cabinets.

I like the direction this is going.

Anyone have any pics of home bars made from "recycled" materials? I need some inspiration.

Man, what a piece I actually haul it out myself!

You guys! I am now thinking of reuse these in my garage, just because I can!? One thing for sure is I am going to have to strip the stain off. Also, I would actually then be able to create new doors for these (I have all equipment, including roman raised panel templates). 10' of coverage (both wall and base cabinets, included with existing perfectly sized "formica " countertop). I hope this would be a good move for this house and a project for this summer.

What are your finishing plans? You only need to strip off the stain if you intend to stain it a different color.
