Laminate over tile countertops?

Half my kitchen has tile. Can I build up the grout lines with bondo, apply contact cement and laminate on top?

And the other side has laminate already, can I put laminate over laminate?

Re: Laminate over tile countertops?

I have put laminate over laminate. Works fine. I did however, scuff up the surface with sandpaper to ensure good adhesive bond.

I think putting laminate over tile will have a very high possibility of lines telegraphing through. Not just the grout lines, but all the tiles also have to be on exactly the same plane.

Ok should I remove the tile first and make sure the counter is smooth?

Re: Laminate over tile countertops?

That would be the safest route. Getting the sub-surface smooth does not sound like an easy task -- maybe put a piece of plywood over the tile sub-surface.

The way I know that you can laminate over laminate is one time I put down laminate over a cabinet door. I tried too hard to re-use one brush when putting down the contact cement and must have left a little lump of old dried glue on the sub-surface --- it telegraphed right through the laminate. Gluing surface must be very smooth and flat.

PS - don't use a brush -- buy those throw-away foam rollers for the contact cement.
