Kitchen Cabinets

I redoing my kitchen and replacing all the cabinets and appliances. It will be peninsula style kitchen with modern cabinets in neutral colors (white or gray). On the back wall I will be going up to the ceiling with cabinets (10). I live in NYC so storage is a premium.

I was speaking with a designer at home depot and was told the following about the cabinet brands:

Kraftmaid and Decora are the top of the line brands in modern finishes. Thomasville has a nice line (NOT the studio line). Home Decorators is one step up from Hampton Bay which is the bottom of all the lines that Home depot carries.

Anyone have any experience with these brands or can they recommend others?

How much better is 3/4 plywood than MDF?

Thanks for the input.

Attached is my layout plan.

The difference between a Bentley and a Volkswagen. Price will follow quality.

Re: Kitchen Cabinets

MDF is a manufactured board of wood fibers and glue & does not repel water well... this is because MDF does not have grain and has markedly different mechanical properties from “real” wood. If MDF comes into contact with even a little water, it will tend to swell and this distortion is often impossible to repair effectively; sinks, dishwasher work with water & to presume there will never be a leak involving these fixtures is illogical IMO.
Any water occurring at floor from many different scenarios is enough to damage the base supports...
I would buy the best wood cabinet bases your budget can afford. MDF uppers & or doors could be a way to control your costs?

Peace

Peace

Re: Kitchen Cabinets

Just remodeled my kitchen with IKEA cabinets (Grimslov off-white)
Very happy with final result, and their return policy is really AWESOME
Also, they should have a 15% off event very soon as well

Re: Kitchen Cabinets

The KraftMaid pricing was out of this world! I found a company called fabuwood that has many of the features of KraftMaid but at 1/2 the price.

Plywood boxes (1/2), soft close, birch doors.

2 week lead time. Very happy
