Kitchen backsplash: install tile first, or attach shelf?

I'm getting ready to install some 1" glass & metal mosaic tiles in a 13" mesh as a kitchen backsplash. I also want to install a small spice rack shelf that will sit behind the stove top (and below the range hood).

The shelf is 26" wide, slightly less wide than the stove, and it is designed so that it has tabs that stick down behind and below the stove top, and it will attach with a few screws into the studs down there, out of view..

Would you install the shelf first and cut and install the tile to fit around the outside of the shelf, or first tile behind the shelf and just cut out the four tiles that would be in the way of the mounting screws?

I guess what I'm asking is should there actually be tile behind the shelf, or just around its perimeter, if you know what I mean, Vern.

Or it's no big deal either way?

Tile first-----the mosaic is tough to cut around anything---a shelf is considered an optional accessory which might get changed before the tile work.

Think about where the screw holes will be for hanging the rack. Glass would not be easy to drill through. You probably will have to use the grout joints. That means you may not find the studs.
