Ideas for a pantry?

Hi all,

So I just bought a house which is really nice and spacious but one thing it's missing that I wish it had is a pantry. Here's what the kitchen area looks like.

I can't think of any good places for a pantry, unfortunately. Was wondering if anyone else had ideas.

I may also do a kitchen island too, to get a bit more prep space.

It would usually go in the corner beside the dishwasher.

Ah, very interesting! I assume you mean remove the top cabinets to make room for the pantry instead?

Re: Ideas for a pantry?

I think the only place you could fit a "typical" pantry would be at the end of that bar pass-through. If you did 12" deep cabinets back to back it'd look good to fill in the space, but it'd still look kind of wonky.

I'd do a pantry island. You can buy pull-outs and fold-outs to serve the functions of a pantry unit and put them into whatever island cabinets you end up with. Rev-A-Shelf has pretty good quality if you don't want to mess around with it too much.

You could buy a tall cabinet that usually hold coats and change out the inside arrangement. Even used cheap antique. Only place I see is at the end of the countertop next to the poles. It's an open concept without the kitchen needs.

If you wouldn't mind losing some space in what appears to be the dining room, You could build out a pantry along the back wall and have a walk through cut in through part of the pass through.

Otherwise, I really like what @Mystryss proposes.

However, what do you want the pantry to do? Is it just for excess food storage or do you plan to do other things in there?

Re: Ideas for a pantry?

It's probably too tight by the stove to build a corner pantry like Neal's idea, not sure if there is another cabinet between the DW and the corner cabinet on the other side. They look like maybe IKEA cabinets, so you could try to match a pantry cabinet. I don't see anywhere good for that unless you fill in that pass through (more on that below).

You could get a rolling cart for an island, but for a permanent one you should have at least 42" to walk by (especially at the ref/stove). 36" is doable on the other side. It looks like it could be tight.

That pass-through looks DIY. It may be the photo perspective, but it looks like one 2x4 post and no beam (just cut 3 or 4 wall studs and added light boxes within the wall plane). Is there a floor above or attic? Not trying to alarm you, but do you have measurements of that post width and from the light fixture rod to the edge of the ceiling?

Re: Ideas for a pantry?

Lovely house and best wishes...I would close up that bar pass through.
Itís not necessary, there is enough open space in your area. That space
could be used for a nice big pantry. How big (long) is that space? Could you
provide another pic?
I think a pantry (in that space) with a small cabinet on the end would look good.

The glass pantry door and white surrounding wall like Neil posted
would be very attractive and functional. Also, the cabinets you pull
out to make the pantry could be partially used in the making of the island.
Post another pic or two.

Re: Ideas for a pantry?

I like Two Knots suggestion of putting the pantry where the pass through is, and I also like having an island. Working in a kitchen an island is my go-to place for everything between refrigerator, stove, dishwasher and sink. Mine isn't big but very efficient.

Re: Ideas for a pantry?

Husband I pondered having a mobile island for a long time. (Ultimately decided I'd rather expand the kitchen another room and have a second peninsula.)
