How to join 2 sink mats

I figured I would ask this forum for I love the way that we have very creative people here.

I bought these 2 sink mats from a thrift store on Sunday (see photo below). They had never been used because they were still stapled to their packaging. I have never used sink mats before. Didn't even know they existed. But if they help a sink from being scratched then they are okay.

My question is that if I want to join these two sink mats are there any suggestions as to how I can do it?

I thought of gluing them but decided against it.

I thought of simply stapling them but I later realized that the staples would rust because of the water in the sink.

I have one of those tools that makes holes on belts. I'm thinking that there must be some kind of plastic fastener or eyelet that I can use.

Any tips?

Depending on the joint you prefer, if you don't find small zip ties too obtrusive they would be the easiest for a flex connection.

In the specialty aisle at most BOX stores, there are drawers of plastic nuts / bolts, that you can use to fasten these together, after making a proper hole with a hole punch.

Or as stated small zip ties, even a bit of bare copper wire, but might scratch your hands.

Re: How to join 2 sink mats

Do not staple or join just several spots. Reason - scum and grime will accumulate eventually between the overlapping parts. They will be impossible to clean unless you unjoin them. You have to keep doing this regularly if you don't want an icky mat.

If you really want to join them, you'll have to glue (glue depends on what kind of resin your mats are made of) them. Make sure every inch of the overlapped areas are joined by glue so there's no gap for dirt to accumulate.

An easier solution is to just find a stainless steel grid for your sink. I got a Vigo brand for my Blanco sink for just $18 (waited until Amazon Warehouse Deals was selling it down from $40).

Re: How to join 2 sink mats

Here's my solution. Sometimes it's just best to go the simple way (see photo below). Two zip ties are enough to hold the two sink mats, I discovered. And they leave enough room to clean between the mats, if necessary. However, I really appreciated all the feedback.
