OK, we'll wait for pics once you go back to the house. Take one from the front and several from behind. One close, then step back a little.

Although it's possible the substrate fell off somehow, (esp. if the tiles are large), I'm starting to think we have a mud job and you think it's the back of tiles you're looking at. But we'll see.
