Grab bar installation.

Of course, the best way to install a grab bar is to screw it into the studs. However, the length of a grab bar doesn't always match the 16" OC stud spacing. In that case, are plastic anchors the next best choice? What else is recommended?

Re: Grab bar installation.

You can always install them at an angle where the caps will fall over a stud. Pre-planning always helps to have 2x12's across at 34" center AFF in a shower or tub.

You are right, though, I noticed none are ever in 16" increments. All are 12", 24", 18" etc.

Neal, I'll watch that video ASAP

Chandler, the last customer didn't want the bar on an angle.

Re: Grab bar installation.

One more option if there is a repairable wall on the opposite side of the wall, you can go in and install support boards, then patch and paint the wall and install the bars normally.
dd57chevy and mark sr like this.

Re: Grab bar installation.

moen makes 16" bars
even have their own anchoring system for retrofit
because we all know those studs never fall out where we need them...

old school was to router/dress up a 1X4 (or 1x6) & pre-paint same as wall color
counter-sink two strong screws per stud through wall board
optional: I paint screw heads or they could be concealed
Stud spacing & length of bar dictates how long a board is required...
Obviously not for inside tub/shower but Takes less time than opening up walls

Edit: no way I'd use plastic plug-in anchors

Peace

Re: Grab bar installation.

Neal, I finally watched that video. I like that grab bar fastener & I'll use it next time. Of course, I'll probably get lucky & hit the stud.

Dr P, Most of the grab bars that I install are inside the tub/shower. Moen shouldn't be the only people who manufacturer 16" grab bars but I guess they are.
