framing for bathtub tiles: small section of wall

Hello everyone,

I'm redoing my bathroom and have a question about the framing for the bathtub.

Background info: The bathtub is fit along a wall that is longer than the bathtub; the bathtub's like 60 inches long, along a wall that is maybe 84 inches (so 2 feet longer). So I'm building a wall out along the width of the bathtub in order to create a 2-foot wide linen closet. I hope you can picture what I mean.

My question: This bathtub is 30 inches wide. I'm thinking of building the wall out (in cement board) to 33 inches so that I have 3 inches of tile out beyond the tub's edge. In other words, there'll be a section of 3 from the ledge of the tub down to the floor. Is 3 inches enough? Or should it be 4 inches? I'm using 3 x 6 subway tiles.

Here's a photo to help illustrate the area I'm taking about. If this area has a name, please enlighten me

Thanks!

Re: framing for bathtub tiles: small section of wall

3" is the number we go for in new houses, most plans are drawn for a 32" tub and are often upgraded to a 34" so we try to fit in a 37" in wall so we don't have to come back and fix anything.
