Fiberglass Garden tub-Refinish or replace?

Hello all, and thanks for having me here on DIY. After doing some reading on this web site about refinishing a tub myself, I feel I am not capable of a project like that. My fiberglass garden tub was refinished twice by the builder, and after 5 years, it has cracked and peeled on the Botton and can no longer be used. I don't want to waste money and have it refinished again, so my question is, do I just replace it, or has anybody ever dealt with companies that do tub inserts? Please advise. Tub inserts look interesting, but unaware of price and quality.
Thanks
Joe

5 years is too short for quality fiberglass to deteriorate.

Was this a custom built item, or an off the shelf thing?

A re-line was my first suggestion, look for a Quality applicator, in your community.

The home was built in 2005 and I doubt this was a custom built tub knowing my builders. I have a guy coming here to give an estimate on refinishing the bottom of the tub. I hate the hassle of the mess and odor, but it seems the cheapest way to go. Maybe this guy has better quality materials than the builders used. I looked up pricing on inserts and I can't afford it. Feel like patching the damage myself and forget how it looks. Thanks for the reply! I'll keep you posted! Let me clarify something: The original tub is 12 years old, but it had to be refinished after 6 years, then again after 5 more years, so this tub has been refinished twice. Obviously not a good quality fiberglass as you said.

The number 1 reason for tub refinishing failure is improper prep! No matter how good the coating used is, if the tub isn't prepped properly - it will fail. When he comes to give you an estimate ask about his prep and how to insure his refinish job will last.

Thanks Mark. I will do just that. I know when the builders did the work under warranty, the 2nd time they did it they had to come back because whatever they used to recoat the tub, never dried! I waited 3 days to use the tub, and when I stepped in, I left foot prints - lol - It's been a hard go here with this tub....Hopefully this company will do it right. They do have good reviews.
