Does it cost much more to build a shower than buying a shower kit?

As the title says I'm wondering if it costs more to build your own shower? I'd rather have a built one but if it costs a lot more then the kit will have to do for a while.

Yep---

Lots more---let me know what you want to do and I'll try to get you some material costs.

For a hand packed tiled base and walls---$150 for drain set--liner--mud and mesh--another $60 or so for the Durrock---$50 to $100 for Red Guard or Hydroban---

Tile---Thinset---grout---caulk---and three days --

A few more dollars for plumbing in the new drain and P-trap--

New shower mixer and the plumbing parts for installation---

I'm in the process of a remodel, I chose to build my own shower. I removed tub, relocated drain, just started 1st layer of mud bed. I was not happy with the way shower kits looked. Thats just me. I will fiqure price and get back to you.

Thanks for the information.

I forgot to add that we are going to build the house this summer so we still have to buy the drain and other stuff for the area that shower is going to be placed in. The shower would be on the second floor for the master bathroom.

I just like the idea of having a custom size shower than pay a bunch for a kit that we would rather have wider than longer. My in-laws that we live with have a shower kit the size of a tub and we don't use the back end of the shower which the seat is in the way but that area is wasted space. The shower isn't really wide enough and I'm small so I feel bad for my husband. They look cheaply made for the big price of them.

I would love to have that stone veneer for the shower walls instead of tile and get a rain fall shower head.

I've also been wondering about a custom concrete tub for the main floor since that will be on a slab. I know from reading it still needs rebar and other stuff inside the walls of the tub other than concrete. I was wondering if that would be cheaper to build or not since we have to build the slab anyway and could probably get the same people to build the tub.

Tubs? Never built one---Sorry--

Please check the referances of any tile contractor --there are some good ones and some not so good--
