Difference in Subway tile from Home Depot / Lowes and "Tile Shop"

Afternoon all.. We are going with a standard white bevel subway tile, the local tile shop doesn't have it in stock, but we need it asap. It was recommended checking lowes or home depot. Is there any difference in the quality? Or anything I should be concerned about?

Thanks!

A higher quality tile will be flatter, more consistent in size, and more square of angles (i.e rectangular rather than parallelogram). ( Consider the fun of trying to maintain 1/16" grout lines when the size of the tiles is not consistent)

Having said that, I don't have any reason to say big box tile is not as good as the stuff at the tile store. This is smaller tile for a backsplash ? The bigger the tile, the more I would be concerned with quality.

FYI - I am just a DIYer --- If you hold tight, I am sure one of the pros will give their opinion.

Yea it's going to be about 25 sq ft of 6x3 white bevel subway tile for kitchen backsplash.

Thanks for input !

I normally buy from a wholesale tile shop, but I have used tile from the box stores now and then. Take a tape measure with you and check a few tiles to see if they measure the same. For what you're doing, it shouldn't be a problem. Be aware with the beveled subway, it's a little more pain in the butt to grout.

Buy an extra box of tiles to make sure you have enough just in case there are any irregular tiles. HD/Lowes will accept any returns within 90 days.

Probably not an issue with something that small but I know for a fact that some of the larger HD tiles are far from flat. That makes it real hard to control lippage.
