Cutting off integrated cultured marble backsplash??

Your advice is much appreciated!!

We are doing a small bathroom upgrade. We had a custom built cabinet made to place on top of cultured marble countertop. The cabinet is level and made to fit perfectly along the wall and mirror.

TWO PROBLEMS:

1. The countertop is not level, it's off by at least 1/2in, in a down slope from the backsplash to the edge of the countertop. Despite adding plastic shims to the underside of the counter top, we still couldn't get the level we needed.

2. The backsplash is butting up against the wall and the large wall to wall mirror sits on the backsplash top. We don't want to crack or remove the mirror. With the downsloping angle of the countertop, and the curved integrated backsplash, the cabinet is not flush with the mirror. We can't lift the countertop any further to level it without cracking the bottom of the mirror and due to resistance from the drywall behind the backsplash.

So, we thought we would make a clean cut on the flat surface of the countertop as close to the backsplash rounded edge as possible, pull the entire countertop forward to allow room to remove the backsplash from the wall underneath and not compromise the mirror. Then slide the countertop back in place, and level off with shims. Install new backsplash and finally the built in cabinet.

Anyone ever heard of this? Or done this before? You insight is much appreciated.

Re: Cutting off integrated cultured marble backsplash??

I've cut cultured marble tops with woodworking tools---usually a fine toothed carbide circular saw---

I bet that the back splash could be cut using an osculating multi tool-expect to spend a lot on blades--that material is abrasive.

It is not easy to get a good straight cut with a Roto Zip---they have a carbide bit for that---

Can you trim the bottom edges of the cabinet to match the slope? Seems like that would be a lot easier.
